Conservation panel floats tree fund, orders plant removal
Conservation · Meeting of August 26, 2026
Chatham Conservation Commission floats tree fund, orders hydrangea removal from wetland buffer. Chair Paul Johnson, Acting Vice Chair Elise Gordon, and members Janet Williams and Eric Hilbert closed hearings and approved orders of conditions for 12 Clark Meadows Way and 48 Salt Marsh Way without objection, then pushed back on mitigation plans for four open notices of intent. Williams proposed redirecting a Woodland Way applicant's required 18 replacement trees into the town's existing tree-replacement fund instead of a property-line screen, saying it "doesn't strike me as anything that's going to benefit the environment." Hilbert pressed to remove roughly 15 mature hydrangeas from a wetland buffer at 26 Whiteley's Way, calling them "absolutely useless" beyond their flowers.
At 58 Diane Drive, the board ordered a septic applicant to stop mowing within 25 feet of a salt marsh and fence off a 50-foot no-mow buffer. All four open matters were continued into September and October; four certificates of compliance were approved unanimously.
