The Town of Chatham announced in its Oct. 16 Mainsheet newsletter that the Select Board has voted to implement the Residential Tax Exemption at 20% for fiscal year 2027 for qualifying primary residences.

Residents who have already filed applications and required documents with the Assessing Office do not need to take further action. Those who have not yet filed are encouraged to do so, and anyone seeking the exemption for FY2027 must submit an application and required documents by April 1, 2027. To qualify, Chatham must be the applicant's primary residence, and the owner must have held the property as of Jan. 1, 2026. Owners whose property is held in trust are asked to let Assessing staff determine eligibility. More information is available from the Assessing Office.

The newsletter also reported that Lieutenant William Massey and Sergeant Joshua Wisniewski were promoted in the Police Department, each having served the town for more than 20 years. At the promotional ceremony on Oct. 14, Town Manager Jill Goldsmith said both "began their careers in public service through military service, Bill in the United States Navy aboard the USS John F. Kennedy, and Josh in the United States Coast Guard, including service right here at Coast Guard Station Chatham."

At its Oct. 13 meeting, the Select Board held its annual Budget Summit with the Finance Committee and Monomoy Regional School Committee to review the FY2028 budget process. The board also made several committee appointments, including Harold Sloane to the Committee for People with Disabilities and Peter Donovan to the Historical Commission. The board additionally voted unanimously to dismiss a complaint regarding Dave Nixon's appointment to the Zoning Board of Appeals after Town Counsel found no illegal action on his part.
